Herbal Treatments for Seasonal Allergies

Nettle (Urtica dioica; U. urens)

Scientific Evidence from Clinical Trials

A randomized, double-blind, study involving 98 volunteers compared the
anti-allergic action of a freeze-dried Urtica dioica preparation to a
placebo during the peak season for allergic rhinitis. Participants were told
to take two capsules as soon as symptoms of allergic rhinitis were
noticed. Assessments were based on symptoms that were noted by the
volunteers in their diaries and on a global response after one week of
treatment. The nettle was shown to be more effective than the placebo in
both assessments (Mittman 1990).
