Hay Fever (Seasonal Allergies) Seasonal allergies primarily involve the membrane linings of the nose, the whites of the eyes, and the eyelids. Causes of Seasonal Allergies Allergies are caused by exposure to airborne substances such as pollens, which are present during specific times of the year. Different individuals can be allergic to different substances, and thus, may develop symptoms during different seasons. Symptoms of Seasonal Allergies Itchy nose, mouth, eyes, and throat Runny nose Congestion Sneezing Whites of eyes may become red and swollen Eyelids may become red and swollen The use of contact lenses can increase the irritation in the eyes Headache Cough Wheezing Irritability Depression Insomnia Loss of appetite Herbal Treatments for Seasonal Allergies Nettle (Urtica dioica; U. urens) Scientific Evidence from Clinical Trials A randomized, double-blind, study involving 98 volunteers compared the anti-allergic action of a freeze-dried Urtica dioica preparation to a placebo during the peak season for allergic rhinitis. Participants were told to take two capsules as soon as symptoms of allergic rhinitis were noticed. Assessments were based on symptoms that were noted by the volunteers in their diaries and on a global response after one week of treatment. The nettle was shown to be more effective than the placebo in both assessments (Mittman 1990). References Mittman, P., 1990.
